    About

In the language of sound recording, stems are audio files that have been split into different tracks for mixing. As part of the multi-platform project RE:SOUNDING, STEMS gives you 51 such audio files and permission to go wild.

From rice poured on the surface of an ancient Đông Sơn drum to the sounds of its base being bowed, this collection of files will instantly open up a world of creative possibility that will speak differently to everyone. These recorded textures are the results of percussionists Salina Myat and Adam Cooper-Standbury experimenting with the Đông Sơn, and by interacting with them you’ll be afforded a deeper understanding of the complexities of these timeless instruments.

The Đông Sơn drum is a central instrument that resounds the history of Vietnamese culture, and through their re:sounding project artists James Nguyen and Victoria Pham have drawn together the many strands of meaning connected to this enduring artefact. The project features commissioned works by international instrumentalists, bands and musicians from Australia, Vietnam and Indonesia, but with STEMS – as well as re:sounding’s own app – the Đông Sơn is at your own fingertips.
