About
If our fate lies in the ear of the other, as Jacques Derrida suggests, how can we re-listen to the world in ways that embrace complexity, mutability and that centre uncertainty – conditions we live with and through daily?
In the ear of an other is an audio artwork in three parts, lightly subtitled. Central to each listening post is an idea – sonic geography, algorithmic voice, language as home – that invites the listener to reposition themselves in the ear of an other.
The subtlest of shifts change how we listen. By subtitling audio, half-phrases, incidental sounds, and muted replies are foregrounded, sources obscured, and a new intermediary of attention is forged.
In the ear of an other strains toward an empathy of listening but ultimately falls short. What remains are the delineations between listener, speaker and an other, transformed but greyed out.
The BLEED ECHO Reference Group projects are original artworks responding to and ricocheting from the five artist projects and curatorial conversations of BLEED.

Bios
Miyuki Jokiranta
Miyuki Jokiranta makes creative radio documentaries and is an emerging radio artist. She presents the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) documentary program, Earshot, has produced for the BBC, the European Broadcasting Union, a raft of ABC programs, and while living in the US, for National Public Radio, Radio Diaries and WNYC’s Radiolab. Miyuki developed her love of radio arts while curating Soundproof and has created work for MONA FOMA, Radio Revolten and Megapolis festivals.
